Noirmont (mountain)

The Noirmont is a 1567  m above sea level. M. high ridge in the Swiss Jura . The summit is on the parish of Arzier-Le Muids in the canton of Vaud , near the border with France , around 15 km northwest of the city of Nyon . The Noirmont area is part of the Parc jurassien vaudois .

geography

The Noirmont is part of a Jura chain that extends in a south-west-north-east direction from the Col de la Givrine pass to the Col du Mollendruz area. It consists of several peaks that are between 1545  m and 1567  m high and form the highest points of this chain. The ridge is bounded in the south by the broad saddle of the Col de la Givrine and in the west by the uppermost section of the Orbe valley with the Lac des Rousses . Towards this valley, the Noirmont falls relatively steeply with a densely wooded slope ( Côte du Noirmont ). In the east there are various ridges and combes (elongated valleys) that form the core of the Parc jurassien vaudois. To the northeast, the ridge extends over the Mont Pelé ( 1532  m ) and the Mont Sâla ( 1511  m ) to the Grande Rolaz .

The summit area of the Noirmont is grassy and shows subalpine vegetation. Extensive Jura pastures with mighty spruce trees stretch out on the heights , either individually or in groups; the steeper slopes are wooded.

On the west side of the mountain there are two ski lifts and several ski slopes that are accessible from France.

geology

In structural and geological terms, the Noirmont forms an anticline of the Jura folds . The mountain top consists of competent limestone from the younger Jurassic period ( Malm ), mainly from Sequan limestone. Due to the limestone, karst phenomena such as sinkholes and cart fields can be observed here.

To the northeast of the Noirmont is the Creux du Croue , a ca.150 m deep basin. Here the rock layers of the Sequanien were completely eroded and the marly and impermeable layers of the Argovia underneath were exposed. That is why a moor could develop in the Creux du Croue.
