In the Middle Ages, Meussia formed its own Kastlanei, independent of the Barony of Moirans . The castle was destroyed by French troops in 1637. Together with Franche-Comté , Meussia came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Since then, the number of inhabitants has decreased slightly again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Meussia was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a plastics processing company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road D470 that leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Claude. Further road connections exist with Clairvaux-les-Lacs and Étival.
