Larrivoire is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Larrivoire is located at 723  m , about eight kilometers southwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic location on a terrace on the southern slope of the Bienne , around 350 m above the valley floor, west of the Combe Mathieu.

The area of the 6.50 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is taken up by the narrow terrace of Larrivoire, which is dominated in the southeast by the steep slope of the Combe Mathieu . The Combe Mathieu forms a largely wooded plateau at an average of 950  m and separates the valleys of Bienne and Tacon. On the eastern edge of the municipality, the highest point of Larrivoire is reached at 1010  m . The western border runs along the Longviry , a left tributary of the Bienne, which is cut deep into the Jura heights. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Larrivoire also includes the hamlets of Samiset ( 610  m ) on a saddle between the slope of Larrivoire and a foothill and Samiat ( 710  m ) on the terrace southwest of the village. Neighboring municipalities of Larrivoire are Saint-Claude in the north, Coiserette in the east, Les Bouchoux and Vulvoz in the south, and Rogna and Chassal-Molinges in the west and northwest.

history

Larrivoire is first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. It belonged to the Saint-Claude Abbey. There was a change of territory in 1811 when the two small communities Samiat and Samiset merged with Larrivoire. In July 1944, the place was looted and destroyed by German troops.

Attractions

The Saint-Georges church, which originally dates back to the 13th century, has been modified several times since then.

With 103 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Larrivoire is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (205 people were still counted in 1886), after a long period of stagnation since the mid-1980s, thanks to the beautiful location, a population increase was recorded again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Larrivoire was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, various residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from La Croix-du-Bar (Saint-Claude) to Vulvoz.
