Martigna is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Martigna is located at 659 m , about 15 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Oyonnax (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a slope gently sloping to the east between the valleys of Ain in the west and Bienne in the east, near the dam of Lac de Vouglans .
The area of the 8.75 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The area is drained by the Dorfbach eastwards to the Ruisseau d'Héria , a right tributary of the Bienne. In a depression south of the village is the small Lac de Chanon with its island. To the north, the municipality extends over the hilly landscape to the Bois Montandriet . On the wooded ridge north of the village, the highest point of Martigna is reached at 778 m . In the south, the municipal ban extends into the Bois de Charveron on the edge of the heights of Montcusel. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Martigna includes the hamlet of Chanon ( 620 m ) on a saddle between Lac de Chanon and the valley of the Bienne, as well as a few individual farms. Martigna's neighboring communities are Moirans-en-Montagne in the north, Villards-d'Héria and Jeurre in the east, Montcusel in the south and Lect in the west.
history
Stray finds indicate that the municipality of Martigna was already populated during Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Martinius and means something like country estate of Martinius (Martiniacum). In the Middle Ages, Martigna belonged to the domain of the Barony of Moirans. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1822 when the previously independent Chanon was incorporated into Martigna.
Attractions
The Martigna chapel, built in the 15th century, was later elevated to a parish church; it has a bell tower from the 19th century. The remains of a Gothic manor house are preserved next to the church . The castle was built in 1713.

Economy and Infrastructure
