Viry is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Viry is located at 761  m , about eight kilometers northeast of the city of Oyonnax (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a hollow open to the east in the High Jura, west of the Longviry valley, on the western edge of the high plateaus of the Hautes-Combes.

The area of the 25.40 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The area is characterized by terrain structures such as ridges and hollows, which are oriented in a south-west-north-east direction according to the strike direction of the Jura folds in this area. The central part is taken up by the plateau of Viry and the boggy depression of the Val du Moulin with the small Lac de Viry . To the east of the Val du Moulin, the ridge of the Mont de Verlon ( 965  m ) and the valley of the Longviry , which drains the main part of the municipal area to the north to the Bienne, are connected . In the far south-east the community area extends over a stepped terrain onto the plateau of the Bois de Viry , in which the highest point of Viry is reached at 1113  m . To the west, the communal soil extends over a wide, wooded ridge to the upper eastern valley slope of the Bienne with the clearing island of Sièges. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Viry also includes various hamlets and farm groups, including:

  • Sièges ( 743  m ) on the slope of the Bois de Sièges high above the Bienne valley
  • La Tour ( 780  m ) in the Val du Moulin
  • Rosay ( 850  m ) in the headwaters of Longviry on the northeastern edge of Mont de Verlon

Neighboring communities of Viry are Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude and Rogna in the north, Choux and Les Bouchoux in the east, Belleydoux in the south and Arbent , Dortan and Lavancia-Epercy in the west.

history

The place name Viry is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Virius and means something like Virius' estate (Viriacum). In early Christian times, probably as early as the 6th century, a priory was founded in Viry, which was dependent on the Condat monastery (now Saint-Claude ). In the Middle Ages, Viry belonged to the Lords of Mornay, who built the Château de la Bâtie here. The castle was built in 1479 by the troops of Louis XI. destroyed. Together with Franche-Comté , Viry came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1946 when the previously independent municipality of Sièges was incorporated into Viry.

Attractions

The current parish church of Viry was built in the 18th century on the site of a previous Romanesque building. Only a few remains of the wall have survived from the former Château de la Bâtie. A country chapel is on the road to Arbent and another chapel is in Sièges.

With 927 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Viry is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (817 people were still counted in 1881), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Viry was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a company in the plastics industry. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Oyonnax to Les Bouchoux. Other road connections exist with Rogna, Molinges , Choux and Belleydoux. The closest connection to the A404 motorway (Saint-Martin-du-Frêne - Oyonnax) is around ten kilometers away.
