In between is the entrance to the valley-like Moirans valley, which is lined on both sides by steep slopes and cliffs. Further to the east, the community soil extends to the predominantly densely wooded plateaus of the Jura ( Forêt de Moirans ) and to the Roche d'Antre ( 961  m ). Moirans-en-Montagne can look back on a very long tradition of settlement. Remains from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age have been found in the municipality . During the Roman times , the settlement of Mauriana , from which the current place name is derived, was located here .

In the 12th century, monks from the Abbey of Saint-Claude founded a priory in the Klustal of Moirans. On the site of the former Gallo-Roman settlement at the foot of the castle hill (Château de Charbonnel), a market town developed in the Middle Ages, which was fortified in the 13th century. The castle became the center of a barony that was dependent on the Saint-Claude Abbey. It was destroyed by French troops in 1637. Together with Franche-Comté , Moirans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1929, Moirans was officially renamed Moirans-en-Montagne in the Isère department to make it easier to distinguish from Moirans .
