geography

Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude is located at 329  m , about ten kilometers west-southwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Bienne , on the south side of the river in a valley widening, at the north foot of the ridge of the Roche de Joux.

The area of the municipality of 9.36 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is occupied by an approximately 1 km wide valley widening of the Bienne, which flows here from southeast to northwest with several meanders through the flat valley floor. The floodplain is flanked on both sides by steeply rising slopes, some of which are criss-crossed by ledges. There are several caves here, including the Lacuzon grotto . In the north, the border runs on the upper edge of the steep drop to the Bienne valley. To the south, the community area extends up the slope, which is subdivided by several erosion channels, and at the height northwest of the Roche de Joux, it reaches the highest point of Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude at 950  m . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude includes the hamlet of Chiriat ( 330  m ) in the Bienne valley to the south-east of the village, as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude are Pratz in the north, Chassal-Molinges in the east, Rogna and Viry in the south, and Lavancia-Epercy and Jeurre in the west.

history

The municipality of Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude was already populated during Roman times. The place name originally comes from the Latin word vallis (valley). Since the Middle Ages, Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude has belonged to the territory of the Saint-Claude Abbey. The village was a center of dyeing, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. At that time, there were extensive saffron plantations in the valley of the Bienne . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A change of area occurred in 1822 when the previously independent Chiriat was incorporated into Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude.

Attractions

The village church of Vaux-lès-Saint-Claude originally dates from the 15th century, but was later changed several times. The Saint-Romain chapel (on the edge of the Saint-Romain plateau on the border with Pratz) has a very beautiful view of the village and the Bienne valley.
