  • Petit Villard ( 640  m ) on the eastern slope of the Ruisseau d'Héria
  • Grand Châtel ( 590  m ) on a terrace on the eastern slope of the Ruisseau d'Héria

history

The municipality of Villards-d'Héria was already inhabited during Roman times. There was a settlement and a temple complex here in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, which were probably abandoned shortly after the year 200. The first excavations were carried out in 1698 at the instigation of Louis XIV .

Since the Middle Ages, the two settlements Grand Villard and Petit Villard belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Together with Franche-Comté , the villages came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1822, Grand Villard and Petit Villard merged to form the municipality of Villards-d'Héria. The area changed in 1946 when the previously independent Grand-Châtel was incorporated into Villards-d'Héria.

Attractions

There is a chapel in Petit Villard. Remains of a temple complex, the surrounding wall, a theater, wall paintings and a bathing facility (the water was derived from Lac d'Antre) have been preserved from the Roman settlement from the 1st century.

With 409 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Villards-d'Héria is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the number of inhabitants in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 400 people, the population has increased again since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Villards-d'Héria was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses and a plastics processing company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D470 road from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Claude. This road spans the valley of Héria with a viaduct, so that the old town center is relieved of through traffic. There are other road connections with Jeurre and Martigna.
