Montcusel is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montcusel is located at 610  m , about eleven kilometers north of the city of Oyonnax (beeline). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley at the height between the valleys of Ain in the west and Bienne in the east, northeast of the Lac de Coiselet reservoir .

The area of the 9.55 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The area is bounded in the west by the valley of the Ain, in the south and east by that of the Bienne. However, the municipality floor only includes the ridge of Montcusel and nowhere extends down to the river. The heights are subdivided by hollows and valleys. They are predominantly forested ( Bois de Charveron ), while the settlements were built in cleared islands. At 809  m , the highest point of Montcusel is reached on the hill north of the village. Towards the south, the ridge drops with a rock wall to the breakthrough valley of the Bienne. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Montcusel also includes various hamlets and individual farms, including:

  • Nezan ( 625  m ) on a plateau east of the Ain valley
  • Grand-Serve ( 725  m ) on a hill east of the village, high above the Bienne valley

Neighboring municipalities of Montcusel are Lect and Martigna in the north, Jeurre in the east, Lavancia-Epercy in the south and Chancia in the west.

history

The place was first mentioned in the 12th century under the names Mont Cusala and Mons cuselli . Since the Middle Ages, Montcusel belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Saint-Claude . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1822, when the previously independent villages of Nezan and Grand-Serve were merged with Montcusel.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Maurice was built in the 15th century on the site of a high medieval chapel and has been changed several times since then. The bell tower was built in the 19th century. There is a traditional bakery in Grand-Serve .

With 156 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montcusel is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (226 people were still counted in 1886), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montcusel was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a factory that produces molds and a turnery. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Chancia to Martigna.
