Crenans is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Crenans is located at 660  m , about 13 kilometers northwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a plateau at the western foot of the wooded high Jura ranges, east of Lac de Vouglans .

The area of ​​the 8.82 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The western part is taken up by the plateau of Crenans and by the slope gently sloping west to the plateau of Charchilla. To the east, the community area extends over a steep slope onto the ridge of the Fyète , on which the highest elevation of Crenans is reached at 899  m . It is separated from the eastern ridge of the height of Moirans (up to 880  m ) by a hollow . In the far south, the municipality extends to Mont Saint-Christophe . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

The hamlet of Coulouvre ( 718  m ) at the western foot of the Fyète and some individual farms belong to Crenans . Neighboring communities of Crenans are Meussia in the north, Moirans-en-Montagne in the east and south, and Charchilla in the west.

history

The municipality of Crenans was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In the 14th century Crenans belonged to the Castlanei of Charchilla. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1822 when the previously independent Coulouvre was incorporated into Crenans.

With 239 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Crenans is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 140 people, there has been a significant increase in population since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Crenans was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Charchilla on the D470 (Lons-le-Saunier-Saint-Claude). There are other road connections with Moirans-en-Montagne and Les Crozets.
