Ambrein is a triterpene - alcohol . It is the main ingredient of the gray ambergris (Ambra grisea) of the sperm whale .
Ambrein was used as a fixator in perfume manufacture . The compound is completely odorless, by oxidation eg. B. by atmospheric oxygen , the actual odorous substances , Ambrox and Ambrinol, are created .
The scent note ranges from woody, dry, balsamic, somewhat tobacco-like to bouquet-like with an aphrodisiac impact. Ambrein is no longer required for the production of Ambrox; it is replaced as a raw material by Sclareol from Salvia sclarea .
Ambrein is a component of aphrodisiacs based on gray amber, which are particularly well known in Arab countries . It is said to increase the concentration of various adenohypophysis hormones as well as the concentration of testosterone in the blood serum .
