Charchilla is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Charchilla is located at 582 m , about 14 kilometers northwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a high plateau between the valley cut of the Lac de Vouglans in the west and the wooded chains of the High Jura in the east.
The area of the 6.50 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western border runs along the steep slope that leads to the valley of the Ain , which is now flooded by the damming of Lac de Vouglans and is a popular recreational area. However, the area does not reach down to the reservoir. The remaining part of the municipality's ground is taken up by the plateau, which is at an average of 580 m . At 690 m , the highest point of Charchilla is reached on the slope adjacent to the east below the Fyète. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Neighboring municipalities of Charchilla are Meussia in the north, Crenans in the east, Moirans-en-Montagne in the south and Maisod in the west.
history
The municipality of Charchilla was already settled in Gallo-Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. From 1308 Charchilla was the center of the Rognon dominion. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Charchilla originally dates from the 14th century and has since been changed several times. The manor house of Rognon has been preserved.

With 280 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Charchilla is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (281 people were still counted in 1886), an overall increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Charchilla was predominantly an agricultural village. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a toy factory and a construction company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D470 road from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Claude. Further road connections exist with Maisod and Crenans.
