Leschères is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Leschères is located at 750 m , about eight kilometers north-northwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a hollow at the eastern foot of the Bois de la Sourde, in the wooded area in the western High Jura, west of the Bienne valley section .
The area of the 8.19 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by terrain structures such as ridges and hollows, which are oriented towards south-south-west-north-north-east in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The central part of the area is occupied by the Leschères basin, which has no surface drainage because the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. This basin is flanked in the southeast by the ridge of the Bois de Cuttura ( 880 m ) and in the north by the long ridge of the Bois de la Sourde , on which the highest elevation of Leschères is reached at 1064 m . The area is separated from the eastern moorland at Les Prés-de-Valfin by a narrow ridge. To the north, the community area extends into a longitudinal hollow and up to the crest of the Bois de la Joux Devant ( 1000 m ). The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
In addition to the actual village, Leschères includes various hamlets and farm groups, including:
- Vichaumois ( 780 m ) at the north foot of the Bois de Cuttura
- Angelon ( 790 m ) in an elevated position on the eastern edge of the Leschères basin
- Granges de la Landoz ( 880 m ) in a valley between the Bois de la Sourde and the Bois de la Joux Devant
Neighboring communities of Leschères are Les Piards and Nanchez with Chaux-des-Prés in the north, La Rixouse and Saint-Claude in the east, Ravilloles in the south and Les Crozets in the west.
history
Finds indicate that the municipality of Leschères was already settled during the Neolithic . Since the Middle Ages, the village has belonged to the territory of the Saint-Claude Abbey. Together with the Franche-Comté , Leschères came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The current village church of Leschères was built in the 19th century.

With 209 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Leschères is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 310 people), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Leschères was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Saint-Claude.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . There are other road connections with Les Piards and Valfin-lès-Saint-Claude.
