geography

Les Piards is located at 915  m , about twelve kilometers north of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a combe that is drained by the Bief de Nanchey, southwest of the high plateau of Grandvaux, between the forest heights of the Forêt des Piards in the west and the Bois de la Joux Derrière in the east.

The area of the former municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented towards the south-south-west-north-north-east in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The central part of the area is occupied by the Combe du Nanchey (an average of 900  m ), which forms a syncline in geological terms . This valley, around 800 m wide, is drained by the Bief de Nanchey , which flows to the north-northeast and seeps away outside the area on the edge of the Grandvaux plateau.

The Combe du Nanchey is flanked in the east by the forest heights of the Bois de la Joux Derrière , on which the highest elevation of Les Piards is reached at 1030  m . To the west, the area extends into the extensive forest of the Forêt des Piards (up to 990  m ), which is characterized by ridges and hollows without drainage above ground. The former municipality is part of the Regional Nature Park Haut-Jura (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Les Piards includes the hamlet of Les Fans ( 900  m ) in the Combe du Nanchey and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Les Piards are Nanchez in the north and east, Leschères and Les Crozets in the south and Étival and Châtel-de-Joux in the west.

history

Les Piards got its name from the Piard family who emigrated here from Geneva in the 15th century . Around 30% of the villagers still bear the name Piard today . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Piards was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Les Piards today also benefits from tourism, especially from winter tourism, when cross-country skiing and alpine skiing can be practiced in the region.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Les Crozets to Prénovel. Other road links exist with Châtel-de-Joux and Leschères.
