The Bienne is a river in France that runs in the Jura department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . It rises under the name of Biennette in the municipality of Prémanon , in the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park , just southeast of the Mont Fier summit (1282 m). The river initially drains north-east to north and at Morez reaches a fault line across the Jura chains , which abruptly forces the river in a south-westerly direction. Here the Bienne flows through the impressive limestone gorge Gorges de la Bienne and finally flows into the Ain after a total of 69 kilometers at Chancia in the backwater of the Lac de Coiselet reservoir as a left tributary . In its mouth section, the Bienne runs on the border with the neighboring Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region .
