Bellecombe is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Bellecombe is located at 1200 m and is one of the highest municipalities in the Jura , about ten kilometers south-southeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends in the High Jura, in a basin of the Hautes-Combes west of the valley of the Valserine .
The area of the 12.17 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The area lies exclusively on the plateau of the Hautes-Combes (an average of 1200 m ). The landscape is wavy and shows terrain structures such as ridges and hollows, which are oriented in a south-west-north-east direction according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The basin layers do not have any surface drainage, as the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. In places that are sealed by clay minerals , there are bog areas. The high plateau of the Hautes-Combes shows a loose structure of pastureland and forest. The eastern boundary is on the wooded ridge (up to 1280 m ), which separates the Hautes-Combes from the valley of the Valserine. In the extreme south, on the ridge that climbs to the Crêt au Merle , the highest point of Bellecombe is reached at 1380 m . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Bellecombe is a scattered settlement that consists of groups of farms and individual farms. Neighboring communities of Bellecombe are Septmoncel les Molunes with Les Molunes in the north, Lélex in the east, Chézery-Forens in the south and La Pesse and Les Moussières in the west.
history
The high plateau around Bellecombe belonged to the monastery of Saint-Claude. Until the end of the 18th century, most of the farms were not open all year round. Bellecombe does not have its own church.

With 63 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bellecombe is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1896 there were still 334 people), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Bellecombe was a village dominated by agriculture , especially cattle breeding and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. There are no other jobs in the village outside of the primary sector.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Les Moussières. Other road connections exist with Lajoux and Les Bouchoux .
