Les Molunes is a town and commune Déléguée in the community Septmoncel les Molunes with 136 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Les Molunes is located at 1250  m and is one of the highest places in the Jura , about eight kilometers southeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends in the high Jura, in a hollow of the Hautes-Combes, west of the valley of the Valserine .

The area of the 20.80 km² large Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The area of the Commune déléguée lies almost exclusively on the plateau of the Hautes-Combes (on average at 1250  m ). The landscape is wavy and shows terrain structures such as ridges and hollows, which are oriented in a south-west-north-east direction according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The basin layers , including the Combe de Laisia , have no above-ground runoff, as the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. In various places there are typical karst phenomena such as sinkholes and cart fields . At 1330  m , the highest point of Les Molunes was reached on a ridge in the center of the Commune déléguée area. The high plateau of the Hautes-Combes shows a loose structure of pastureland and forest.

To the west, the floor of the Commune déléguée extends to the Belvédère de la Cernaise and La Roche Blanche viewpoints ( 1140  m ) above the steep drop to the Gorges du Flumen . The only surface flowing water is the Bief des Parres , which is located in an erosion valley (southern border of the Commune déléguée) and drains the area to the Gorges du Flumen near Saint-Claude. In the east, the area of the Commune déléguée extends to the course of the Valserine between Lélex and Mijoux and thus includes the entire wooded western valley slope ( Côte Chevalière ). The area of the Commune déléguée is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Les Molunes is a scattered settlement consisting of groups of farms and individual farms. Neighboring municipalities to the municipality of Les Molunes were Septmoncel and Lajoux in the north, Mijoux in the east, Lélex and Bellecombe in the south and Les Moussières and Villard-Saint-Sauveur in the west.

history

The high plateau around Les Molunes belonged to the monastery of Saint-Claude. Up until the 18th century, most of the farms were not open all year round. In 1790, after being separated from Septmoncel, Les Molunes became an independent municipality. The village does not have its own church.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Les Molunes merged with Septmoncel to form the new municipality of Septmoncel les Molunes .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Les Molunes was a village dominated by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the community.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Les Moussières to Lajoux. The main access is from Les Moussières. Further road connections exist with Septmoncel and Bellecombe.
