Septmoncel is a town and commune Déléguée in the community Septmoncel les Molunes with 693 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Septmoncel is located at 960  m , about four kilometers southeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The former street-line village extends in the high Jura , on a slope sloping to the southeast above the valley of the Ruisseau de Chapy at the upper entrance to the Gorges du Flumen, in the northern area of the Hautes-Combes.

The 19.86 km² Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The area of the Commune déléguée lies almost exclusively on the plateau of the Hautes-Combes (on average at 1100  m ). The landscape is wavy and shows terrain structures such as ridges and hollows, which are oriented in a south-west-north-east direction according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The broad valley of Septmoncel is deepened into this plateau ( drained by the Ruisseau de Chapy ), which gradually descends towards the south-west. With a distinctive valley step, this valley flows into the transverse valley of the Gorges du Flumen , which is designed as a typical gorge . The Gorges du Flumen are flanked on both sides by steep slopes, which are criss-crossed by numerous ledges. In the north the Klus is bordered by the height of Sur les Grés ( 1089  m ), in the south by the Roche Blanche (1140 m above sea level; lookout point).

In the north, the area of the Commune déléguée extends to the wooded ridge ( 1237  m ) that separates the valley of Septmoncel from the Combe de Tressus . To the east, the floor of the Commune déléguée extends in the Bois du Gyps ( 1230  m ) and on the plateau south of Lajoux. At 1281  m above the La Trace farmstead on the edge of the Valserine valley, the highest point in the Commune déléguée Septmoncel was reached. The plateau shows a loose structure of pastureland and forest. In various places there are typical karst phenomena such as sinkholes and cart fields . The area of the Commune déléguée is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the village itself, the Commune déléguée Septmoncel also includes various hamlets, farm groups and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Les Moulins ( 801  m ) at the upper entrance to the Gorges du Flumen
  • Montépile ( 880  m ) on the southeast slope of Sur les Grés
  • Sur l'Etain ( 914  m ) in the valley at Ruisseau de Chapy
  • Sur le Chapy ( 965  m ) on the southern slope of the Ruisseau de Chapy
  • Le Manon ( 1167  m ) on the plateau west of Lajoux

Neighboring communities of Septmoncel were Saint-Claude in the north, Lamoura and Lajoux in the east, Les Molunes in the south and Villard-Saint-Sauveur in the west.

history

The area around Septmoncel was cleared and made arable by the monks of the Saint-Claude monastery from around the year 800. Septmoncel was first mentioned in a document in 1245 in a bull by Pope Innocent IV , at that time still under the name Septem Acervis . The small village formed a parish that extended over large parts of the Hautes-Combes. Located in the border area between France and Franche-Comté, Septmoncel was sacked by French troops in 1639. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

In the 18th century, the village developed into a center of gem and diamond cutting (including accessories for the watch industry). The area changed in 1790, when Les Molunes was first separated from Septmoncel, and in 1839 with the separation of Lajoux and Lamoura.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Septmoncel merged with Les Molunes to form the new municipality of Septmoncel les Molunes .

Attractions

The current parish church of Saint-Etienne was consecrated in 1682. In the Musée du Coulou, the handicrafts of the region are shown. Natural attractions in the area include the Gorges du Flumen, the Flumen waterfalls and the Chapeau de Gendarme . The latter forms a striking rock formation on which the fold structure of the rock layers from the Cretaceous period is clearly visible. The structure got its name because of the similarity to the shape of a gendarme hat.

With its last 680 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), Septmoncel was one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 1,444 people counted), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Septmoncel was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. The gemstone cutting shop, which has been in operation since the 18th century, is still important today. There are also some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Saint-Claude.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Septmoncel now also benefits from tourism, especially winter tourism, when cross-country skiing can be practiced on the Hautes-Combes plateau. The slopes south of Le Manon are made accessible by ski lifts for alpine skiing.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on a main road that leads from Saint-Claude to the Col de la Faucille . Further road connections exist with Lamoura and Les Moussières .
