location

Hamba (Hahnbach) in 2004

Hamba (Hahnbach) is about ten kilometers north of the district capital Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) and two kilometers away from Șura Mare (Groß-Schänen), where the mayor's office is also located.

The village is located between the Kaltbachtal and the Harbachtal , on the watershed between the Mureș ( Mieresch ) and Olt ( Alt ) rivers and therefore exactly on the border between the "Transylvanian Wine Country" and the "Haferland".

history

Earlier story

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1337 - together with Groß-Schänen. Hahnbach has always been a free municipality, because it was located on the historic Königsboden , on which the Transylvanian Saxons enjoyed special privileges. The Turkish invasion of 1493 affected Hahnbach particularly badly. The basilica was also destroyed at that time.

Younger story

In the period immediately after the Second World War - some failed attempts were made to forcibly settle Romanian rural populations in Hamba instead of Saxony.

As is usual in the Transylvanian-Saxon villages of southern Transylvania, after the fall of 1989, a very strong wave of emigration to Germany , mainly to southern Germany, began in Hamba .

In Germany, the former citizens of Hahnbach have been organized in the Heimatortgemeinschaft (HOG) Hahnbach eV since 1981. Every second year a local meeting of the HOG Hahnbach takes place in Schorndorf - Schornbach.

Built around 1500, the fortified church was almost completely demolished in the 18th century. The tower alone is still in its original form today. New buildings and extensive additions, renovations and renovations to the church were carried out in 1749, 1830, 1837, 1970 and 2013.

The entire renovation costs in 2013, for the roof of the tower and church, new gutters on the church, were financed by donations from former Hahnbachers from Germany.

present

Since around 2000, the village of Hamba has been experiencing a process of social restructuring that has clearly benefited the townscape . Due to the proximity to Hermannstadt (Sibiu), more and more townspeople have bought and renovated houses in the village. You use this as a second or main residence. On August 9, 2014 and August 13, 2017, meetings of former Hahnbachers took place in Hahnbach.
