Coyron is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Coyron is located at 534  m , about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura on a high plateau between the valley cut of the Lac de Vouglans in the west and the wooded chains of the High Jura in the east.

The area of the municipal area of 5.53 km² (with lake portion 7.38 km²) covers a section of the French Jura. The western border forms the Lac de Vouglans, which was dammed in 1969 and flooded the deeply cut, winding valley of the Ain . Today it is a popular recreational area. On its east side, the lake is flanked by an almost 100 m high steep slope, which leads to the adjacent plateau (an average of 520  m ). At 555  m , the highest point of Coyron is reached on the eastern border of the municipality. In the north, the erosion valley of the Cimante, sunk into the plateau, forms the boundary. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring communities of Coyron are La Tour-du-Meix and Barésia-sur-l'Ain in the north, Thoiria and Meussia in the east, Maisod in the south and Orgelet in the west.

history

The municipality of Coyron was already settled during Roman times. At that time there was probably a Roman bridge over the Ain on the site of the later Pont de la Pile. In the Middle Ages the river was crossed by ferry until a bridge was built again in 1776. The area changed in 1813 when the previously independent Garde-Chemin was incorporated into Coyron.

With 73 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Coyron is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (111 people were still counted in 1886), a slight population increase has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Coyron was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The Lac de Vouglans is a popular excursion and recreation area. In the summer months there are numerous opportunities to practice leisure and water sports.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road D470 that leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Claude. The 400 m wide Lac de Vouglans is spanned by the Pont de la Pile bridge structure.
