Ville Juhani Nieminen (born April 6, 1977 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and today's coach who was active for many years at Tappara Tampere in the Liiga . In the National Hockey League he played for the Colorado Avalanche , Pittsburgh Penguins , New York Rangers , San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks, among others . Since 2018 he has been the head coach of the Pelicans Lahti in the Liiga.
Career
Ville Nieminen began his career in 1993 with the B-Juniors of Tappara Tampere . The following year he played for the A-Juniors and was allowed to play his first games with the professionals in the SM-liiga . In the 1995/96 season he reached 43 points in 20 games among the juniors and thus made the final leap to the pros. After his first full season in the SM-liiga, he was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in the third round at position 78.
In the fall of 1997, he went to North America and played for the Hershey Bears , the Colorado farm team in the American Hockey League . During the 1999/2000 season he was allowed to play his first game for the Avalanche in the National Hockey League . But it was the only one for this season. But he played his best season in the AHL and scored a total of 51 points in 74 games.
In the 2000/01 season he still played partially for the Hershey Bears, but mainly he was part of the NHL squad of the Colorado Avalanche. With them he won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season . The following season he took part in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City with the Finnish team . Shortly thereafter, he was transferred from Colorado to the Pittsburgh Penguins .
He played in Pittsburgh for a year and a half and signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 2003 , who transferred him to the Calgary Flames in February 2004 . With Calgary he moved to the Stanley Cup final, but lost there just under the Tampa Bay Lightning . When the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled due to the lockout , Nieminen moved to Finland to his hometown club Tappara.
In the NHL, Ville Nieminen was considered a striker who could handle the puck very well and had a good game both offensively and defensively, but scored too few goals.
In the fall of 2005, the NHL started playing again and Ville Nieminen signed a contract with the New York Rangers . In February 2006 he won the Olympic silver medal in Turin with the Finnish national team . A month later, the New York Rangers transferred him to the San Jose Sharks . But he only stayed in San Jose for a year when he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in late February 2007 . After the end of the season he returned to Europe, where he signed a contract with the Malmö Redhawks in the HockeyAllsvenskan . After a year he left the club and moved back to his hometown club Tappara Tampere in the SM-liiga.
From 2010, Nieminen played in the Continental Hockey League , first in the 2010/11 season for HK Sibir Novosibirsk and between May and October 2011 for Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk . In early November 2011 he was signed by the Latvian KHL participant Dinamo Riga . Two months later, an engagement with the Swedish second division club Örebro HK followed . For the 2012/13 season , the Finn was again committed by his youth club Tappara Tampere.
After the 2014/15 season, which he had spent with Lukko Rauma , he ended his career.
