Saint-Pierre is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saint-Pierre is located at 882  m , about 20 km south of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The street-line village extends in the Jura , on the vast plateau of Grandvaux, on the edge of the forest heights of the Bois de la Joux Derrière.

The area of the 16.37 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Grandvaux plateau (an average of 880  m ). It shows only slight differences in relief and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. The area has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. Bog areas could develop in some hollows. The karst features , such as cart fields and sinkholes, are characteristic of the plateau .

To the west, the municipality extends to the elongated and densely wooded height of the Bois de la Joux Derrière (on the Raverette 1121  m ) and over the narrow longitudinal basin of the Combe de Trémontagne in the Bois des Mouillères , in which at 1134  m the highest elevation of Saint-Pierre is reached. The north-western boundary mostly runs along the Dombief stream , a left tributary of the Lemme . In the far north is the small Lac Ratay , embedded in a hollow between the surrounding forest heights. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Saint-Pierre also includes several hamlets, groups of farms and individual farms, including:

  • Les Dadonnins ( 901  m ) on the Grandvaux plateau at a road cross
  • La Croix de Pierre ( 885  m ) on the Grandvaux plateau
  • Les Bouvets d'Amont ( 872  m ) on the Grandvaux plateau

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Pierre are La Chaux-du-Dombief and La Chaumusse in the north, Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux in the east, Grande-Rivière Château in the south and Saint-Maurice-Crillat in the west.

history

Since the Middle Ages, Saint-Pierre has belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Grandvaux, which was merged with the Abbey of Saint-Claude in the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 17th century, Saint-Pierre was a center of saffron cultivation.

Attractions

The Saint-Pierre church was built in the 19th century on the site of a 17th century chapel.

With 342 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Pierre is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (355 people were still counted in 1886), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Pierre was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a company that makes glasses and a cabinet-making workshop. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

Although the village is located off the main thoroughfares, it is still easily accessible thanks to the proximity of the main roads N5 (Champagnole – Morez) and N78 (Lons-le-Saunier – Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux). Another road connection is with Grande-Rivière.
