La Chaumusse is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Chaumusse is located at 884  m , about 18 kilometers south of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the extensive high plateau of Grandvaux, on the edge of a moor valley southeast of the forest heights of La Joux Derrière.

The area of the 10.62 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Grandvaux plateau (an average of 900  m ). It shows only slight differences in relief and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. The area is drained by a stream to the northeast to the Lemme . This forms the eastern boundary of the municipality. It first flows through a wide flood plain and then crosses the Prélet chain in a gorge-like breakthrough. The north-western boundary of the plateau is marked by the forest peaks of La Joux Derrière (at 962  m, the highest elevation of La Chaumusse) and Bois des Assiettes ( 939  m ). The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, La Chaumusse also includes several hamlets, farm groups and individual farms, including:

  • Sur le Pré ( 858  m ) on the Grandvaux plateau
  • Les Chauvettes de Vent ( 885  m ) on the Grandvaux plateau
  • Les Chauvettes de Bise ( 880  m ) on the southern edge of the Bois des Assiettes
  • Pont de Lemme ( 823  m ) in the Lemme valley

Neighboring municipalities of La Chaumusse are La Chaux-du-Dombief in the north, Fort-du-Plasne in the east, Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux in the south and Saint-Pierre in the west.

history

Since the Middle Ages, La Chaumusse has belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Grandvaux, which was merged with the Abbey of Saint-Claude in the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 402 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), La Chaumusse is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (340 people were still counted in 1886), a slight population increase has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Chaumusse was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a company that makes glasses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

La-Chaumusse - Fort-du-Plasne train stop

Although the village is away from the major thoroughfares, it is still easily accessible thanks to the proximity of the main roads N5 (Champagnole-Morez) and N78 (Lons-le-Saunier - Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux). La Chaumusse has a train station (near the hamlet of Pont-de-Lemme) on the railway line from Champagnole to Morez, which opened in 1900.
