Saint-Lupicin is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Coteaux du Lizon with 2,073 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saint-Lupicin is located at 588 m , about six kilometers west of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic location on the Plateau du Lizon, around 200 m above the valley floor of the Bienne .
The area of the 9.54 km² Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The central part was occupied by the Plateau du Lizon (an average of 580 m ), which has a width of about 1.5 kilometers and a length of two kilometers. To the east, this plateau drops steeply to the deeply carved erosion valley of the Lison (right tributary of the Bienne), which forms the eastern border of the Commune déléguée. To the northwest, the area of the Commune déléguée extends over an initially gently, then steeply rising slope to the height of La Scia ( 895 m ) and to the adjacent Jura plateau, which is predominantly forested. In the Forêt d'Annuelle , the highest point of the Commune déléguée Saint-Lupicin is reached at 915 m . The area of the Commune déléguée is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
The commune déléguée Saint-Lupicin includes the hamlet of Le Patey ( 700 m ) on the slope above the village and a few individual farms. Neighboring communities of Saint-Lupicin were Moirans-en-Montagne and Ravilloles in the north, Cuttura and Ponthoux in the east, Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude in the south and west, and Villards-d'Héria in the west.
history
In the area of today's Saint-Lupicin, Saint Lupicinus (brother of Saint Romanus ) founded a priory in 445. As early as 480 the priory had around 150 monks. These cleared the land in the area and made it arable. The place that arose at the priory, which was then called Lauconne, soon developed into an important pilgrimage destination. Around 1100 the village was renamed Saint-Lupicin after the founder of the priory. It became the center of a parish.
Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. During the French Revolution , the place was temporarily renamed Lauconne again. The area changed in 1822 when the previously independent Le Patey was incorporated into Saint-Lupicin.
On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Saint-Lupicin merged with Cuttura to form the new municipality of Coteaux du Lizon.
Attractions
The Romanesque parish church was built in the 12th century using individual components from the previous early Christian building. The church has a rich interior, including a statue of Christ from the 13th century, a gold bust of St. Lupicinus (18th century) and a gold chalice from the 17th century. The priory house built in the 14th century has also been preserved.

With 2091 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2013), Saint-Lupicin was one of the medium-sized communities in the Jura department. After the population in the middle of the 20th century had always been in the region of 1100 people, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1960s thanks to the attractive residential area.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Saint-Lupicin was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In the course of the late 19th and 20th centuries, various industrial companies settled in the village. The industries that are important today include the plastics industry, the manufacture of auto accessories and the transportation industry. Saint-Lupicin is also the location of the Maison de l'Environnement, a center for multiple sclerosis, and a psychiatric center. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Oyonnax and Saint-Claude.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the D118 departmental road from Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude to Clairvaux-les-Lacs . There are other road connections with Cuttura and Pratz .
