With effect from January 1, 2016, the original commune of Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude and Ponthoux were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude of the same name and have the status of a commune déléguée in the new commune . The administrative headquarters are in Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude.

geography

Ponthoux is located at 590  m , about four kilometers west of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a protrusion on the eastern slope of the Lison valley, on the slope of the ridge of Avignon north of the Bienne valley .

The area covered a section of the French Jura. The western border ran along the Lison , which flows here in a deep erosion valley to the south to the Bienne. From the course of the river, the area extended eastward over a steep slope and the terrace of Ponthoux to the ridge of the wide ridge of Avignon, which geologically forms an anticline of the Jura folds . On this ridge, the highest point in the municipality of Ponthoux was reached with 890  m . The area was part of the Regional Nature Park Haut-Jura (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring towns of Ponthoux were Cuttura in the north, Avignon-lès-Saint-Claude in the east, Saint-Claude in the south and Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude and Coteaux du Lizon with Saint-Lupicin in the west.

history

Since the Middle Ages, Ponthoux has belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

The municipality of Ponthoux was incorporated into Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude on January 1, 2016.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ponthoux was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the community.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road in the valley of the Bienne. Another road connection is with Cuttura.
