Cuttura is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Coteaux du Lizon with 324 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Jura department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Cuttura is located at 619  m , about five kilometers northwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a hill east of the Lison valley cut, at the foot of the Bois de Cuttura.

The area of the 5.95 km² large Commune déléguée covers a section of the French Jura. The western border ran along the Lison , which here gradually deepens into the Plateau de Lizon. From the course of the river, the area of the Commune déléguée extends eastward over the plateau of Cuttura and to the adjacent, mostly wooded ridges of the Bois de Cuttura (up to 840  m ), Bois de Lésigna (up to 750  m ) and Forêt d'Avignon . Here, at 900  m, the highest elevation of Cuttura was reached. The area of the Commune déléguée is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring communities of Cuttura were Saint-Claude in the northeast, Avignon-lès-Saint-Claude in the southeast, Ponthoux and Saint-Lupicin in the south and Ravilloles in the northwest.

history

In the 5th century, the Notre-Dame priory was founded in what is now the municipality, but it was destroyed in the 8th century. In the meantime the settlement of Cuttura had developed near this priory. The priory, rebuilt in the 10th century, was named Notre-Dame-de-Cuttura. Since the Middle Ages, the village and priory have belonged to the territory of the Saint-Claude Abbey. Together with Franche-Comté , Cuttura came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Cuttura merged with Saint-Lupicin to form the new municipality of Coteaux du Lizon.

With its last 329 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), Cuttura was one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (310 people were counted in 1896), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Cuttura was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. A turnery was part of the traditional craft. The hydropower of the Lison was used to generate energy and to operate mills. Today there are some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road in the valley of the Bienne. There are other road connections with Saint-Lupicin, Ravilloles, Leschères and Valfin-lès-Saint-Claude.
