geography
Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude is located at 530 m , about seven kilometers west of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on a slope inclined to the east, around 200 m above the valley floor of the Bienne , on the edge of the Plateau du Lizon.
The area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is occupied by a relatively gently sloping slope to the east, which forms the southern continuation of the Plateau du Lizon. To the east, the area extends into the valley of the Bienne. The river takes in the Lison, which flows from the north, and draws a sharp arc by flowing around the promontory of the Truffet . In the north-west, the former municipal area extends in a narrow strip over a steep slope to the adjacent Jura plateau, which is predominantly forested and on a hilltop of the Forêt d'Annuelle reaches the highest point of Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude at 936 m . In the extreme northwest is the lake Lac d'Antre. The area is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude includes the Lison settlement ( 380 m ) in the Bienne valley at the mouth of the Lison and a few individual farms. Neighboring towns of Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude are Coteaux du Lizon with Saint-Lupicin in the north, Ponthoux and Saint-Claude in the east, Chassal-Molinges in the south and Pratz and Villards-d'Héria in the west.
