Mairie Belleydoux

Belleydoux is a French municipality with 314 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Nantua in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Belleydoux is located at 834  m , about ten kilometers east of the city of Oyonnax and 43 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the extreme northeast of the Haut- Bugey , in the Jura , on a slope sloping to the southeast above the valley of the Semine , opposite the Roche de la Fauconnière, on the edge of the plateau of the Hautes-Combes.

The area of the 17.63 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The southern part is occupied by the deeply carved erosion valley of the Semine , which flows in this area from east to west and feeds its water to the Valserine . The valley is lined by two distinctive semicircular evacuation kettles with characteristic vertically sloping rock walls, the so-called "cirques". South of the Semine is the Cirque de la Fauconnière ; the border runs on the upper edge of the rock face ( 1200  m ) on the edge of the extensive forest area Forêt de Champfromier . The Combe d'Orvaz , which is also dominated by striking rock faces, opens at an angle on the northern side of the valley .

The western part of the municipality includes a high plateau inclined slightly towards the south (at an average of 900  m ), which is partly used as pastureland, partly with forest ( Bois de la Montagne Brûlée and Forêt de Belleydoux ). To the east, another step leads over to the high plateau of the Hautes-Combes (to the north adjoining the Combe d'Orvaz). In the far east, on the height of the Crêt Mathieu forest, the highest point in Belleydoux is reached at 1271  m . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Belleydoux also includes various hamlets and farm groups, including:

  • Merle-en-Bas ( 850  m ) on the edge of the plateau above the Semine valley
  • Merle-en-Haut ( 860  m ) on the edge of the plateau above the Semine valley
  • Gobet ( 920  m ) on the slope north of the Semine valley

Neighboring municipalities of Belleydoux are Viry , Les Bouchoux and La Pesse in the north, Champfromier in the east, Giron in the south and Échallon in the west.

history

Belleydoux is first mentioned in a document in 1159. At that time it belonged to the Gobet domain. Since the Middle Ages, the village has been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon it came to France in 1601. Located on the border between France and Franche-Comté, there were multiple disputes at Belleydoux in the 17th century. In 1944 the village was partially destroyed by German troops.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Sébastien de Belleydoux was built between 1830 and 1832. On the site of a previous building, the Sainte-Anne chapel was built in 1958 in the neoclassical style. There is a manor house in the hamlet of Gobet.

After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1906 there were still 646 people counted), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the mid-1970s. The local residents of Belleydoux are called Belleydousan (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Belleydoux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort, Belleydoux also benefits from tourism, especially from winter tourism, when cross-country skiing can be practiced on the Hautes-Combes plateau .

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Germain-de-Joux to Saint-Claude . Further road connections exist with Giron and La Pesse. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 23 kilometers away.

In Belleydoux there is a state primary school ( école élémentaire ).
