Montréal-la-Cluse is a French municipality with 3435 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Nantua in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Montréal-la-Cluse is 500  m , about ten kilometers southwest of the city of Oyonnax and 27 km east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north of Bugey , in the plain northwest of the Lac de Nantua in the Jura , on the Ange at the entrance to the Juraquertal of the Cluse de Nantua .

The area of the 12.83 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The western part lies in the Brion plain, which is almost two km wide here and forms a syncline in the Jura folds . The plain used to be a large swamp area, which was drained and converted into cultivated land after the artificial lowering of the lake level of Lac de Nantua in 1856. The southern border runs along the Bras du Lac drainage channel , which feeds the water to the Oignin . The Ange from the Oyonnax valley also flows through the plain and flows into the Oignin at Brion.

The valley level is bounded in the west by the ridge near Montréal. To the east, the community area extends into the densely forested area of the Upper Jurassic. Here you will find the Plateau de Don ( 760  m ), which drops steeply with a rocky edge to Lac de Nantua, the deeply carved erosion valley of the village stream of Le Landéron and the slowly rising high plateau of the Forêt de Montréal to the east . In this forest area, the highest point in Montréal-la-Cluse is reached at 960  m .

The municipality of Montréal-la-Cluse is made up of various villages and hamlets, namely:

  • Montréal ( 500  m ) slightly elevated on the western edge of the Ange valley plain
  • La Cluse ( 478  m ) at an important road cross on the north-west bank of Lac de Nantua
  • La Croix-Chalon ( 476  m ) in the plain on the Ange
  • Le Landéron ( 485  m ) on the eastern edge of the Ange valley plain
  • Le Grand Pont ( 490  m ) in the valley of the Ange

Neighboring municipalities of Montréal-la-Cluse are Izernore and Martignat in the north, Apremont in the east, Nantua and Port in the south and Brion and Béard-Géovreissiat in the west.

history

The earliest settlement in today's municipality was called Sénoche and was located in the valley of the Ange, east of what is now Montréal. After the lords of Thoire-Villars had built their castle on a rock spur from 1244 to 1248, which they called Mons Regalis , the residents of Sénoche gave up their settlement, settled at the foot of the castle hill and thus founded the village of Montréal. In 1287 the place was granted certain freedoms. Under Humbert VII of Thoire-Villars, the castle and village were sold to the Counts of Savoy in 1402 , who were from then on empowered to set up the Kastlan of Montréal. The La Cluse settlement developed on the site of the former infirmary in Montréal.

With the Treaty of Lyon , Montréal came to France in 1601. Montréal Castle was demolished in 1602 under King Henry IV . At the instigation of Louis XIII. However, the castle was rebuilt in 1622 and became a garrison location. But it was demolished again in 1635. In the 17th century, the rule of Montréal passed to the Douglas family, who resided here until the French Revolution .

In 1979, Montréal was officially renamed Montréal-la-Cluse, as La Cluse at the crossroads at the entrance to the Cluse de Nantua had become much larger than the village of Montréal.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Maurice in Montréal was built in the 13th and 14th centuries in Gothic style; the ship, however, was largely rebuilt in the 17th century. On the rocky spur above Montréal, ruins of the former castle are visible. There are also ruins of a former mansion on Mont Bey. One of the natural attractions is the Lac de Nantua , which is nestled in a basin between steep slopes criss-crossed by ledges. There is a beautiful park on the lakeshore at La Cluse.

With 3,435 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montréal-la-Cluse is one of the medium-sized communities in the Ain department. Since the beginning of the 1960s, a significant increase in population has been recorded, combined with a doubling of the population. The La Cluse and Montréal settlements have almost grown together today. The local residents of Montréal-la-Cluse are called Montréalais (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Montréal-la-Cluse was a predominantly agricultural and forestry village until the 20th century . In the course of the 20th century, La Cluse developed into an industrial location. Since the 1970s, larger commercial and industrial zones have been created at the convenient location in the valley west of La Cluse. Companies in the metalworking, plastics, furniture and precision engineering industries settled here.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is at the crossroads of the departmental roads from Nantua to Bourg-en-Bresse and from Oyonnax to Pont-d'Ain . The next connection to the A 404 motorway (Saint-Martin-du-Frêne-Oyonnax), which crosses the municipality, is around two kilometers away. La Cluse is also on the Bourg-en-Bresse – Bellegarde railway with connections to Bourg-en-Bresse and Morez .

In Montréal-la-Cluse there are two pre-schools ( école maternelle ), a state primary school ( école élémentaire ) and a comprehensive school ( collège ).
