The two valleys are separated in the southern half of the municipality by a plateau on which the old town center of Neuville is located. In the northern half the plateau rises to a forested chain of hills, on which the community reaches its highest point at 427  m . The western boundary of the municipality also includes the Suran valley and runs at an irregular distance from its meandering river. There are steep slopes in many places on the valley edges of both rivers. In Neuville, the Ain is dammed up by a weir to which a small power station is connected. The municipal area is divided into forests (35%), fields and other agricultural areas (33%) and meadows (26%).

history

Historical view of Le Port with the Ain bridge and the ascent to Neuville

The traces of human presence in Neuville-sur-Ain go back to the Upper Paleolithic . In the layers of the soil of the Abri sous roche de la Colombière in the steep face on the right bank of the Ain, utensils and decorated bones from a Magdalenian culture were found in the 19th and 20th centuries . The Abri is classified as a monument historique .

Bricks, pottery shards and mosaic stones from ancient times came to light at sites in Saint-André and Neuville. In the High Middle Ages the place was called Novavilla , when the existence of a church was attested in 1112 ( Ecclesia de Novavilla, in pago Lugdunensi, supra ripam fluvii qui dicitur Ignis sita ). A chapel in the hamlet of Saint-André has survived from 1184. In Châteauvieux, Fromente and Thol there existed small lordships in the Middle Ages, which were first mentioned in documents in 1280, 1289 and 1330 and were under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy in the 13th and 14th centuries . The village of Neuville belonged to the Fromente (s) lordship.

The camp Camp de Thol was built 1939/1940 by the French army and served during the war in Algeria as an internment camp for supporters of the FLN , in 1961 as a penal institution. It was dissolved in the 1990s and the property became the property of the municipality.

Attractions

  • The ruins of the Château de Thol on a 60 m high hill still tower over the plain of the Ain. The medieval castle has a square floor plan with two defense towers in the west and is surrounded by a moat.
  • The Château de la Tour stands above Le Port and dates from the 19th century. It replaced a medieval building and has differently designed facades on its four sides. It is surrounded by a 17th and 18th century park.
  • The castle in Châteauvieux received its present form in the 19th century and was converted into a hotel in 1986.
  • On the Ain near Port and on the Suran near Fromente there are former water mills.
