geography

Béard-Géovreissiat is located at 560  m , about eleven kilometers southwest of the city of Oyonnax and 25 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The village extends in northern Bugey , on a slope sloping to the west over the valley of the Oignin , in the Jura .

The area of the 4.69 km 2 municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The southern border runs along the main road that leads from Nantua to Bourg-en-Bresse and lies in the Brion plain. From here the municipal area extends northwards to the adjoining heights of Bois de Ban and Mollard de Bretonne between Géovreissiat and Montréal . The highest point in the municipality is reached on the latter at 724 m. The western boundary is formed by the winding course of the Oignin, which emerges from the Brion plain, flows through a valley that is slightly deepened into the surroundings and then reaches the Izernore basin.

The community consists of three districts:

  • Géovreissiat ( 560  m ) in a basin southwest of the Mollard de Bretonne
  • Béard ( 490  m ) on the Oignin valley north of the Brion plain
  • Saint-Germain-de-Béard ( 490  m ) on the plateau east of the Oignin

Neighboring municipalities of Béard-Géovreissiat are Izernore in the north, Montréal-la-Cluse in the east, Brion in the south and Nurieux-Volognat in the west.

history

From the 12th century Géovreissiat formed a parish that was initially dependent on Belley , then on the Nantua Monastery. The village was under the rule of the Thoire-Villars and from 1402 under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Géovreissiat came to France in 1601. The area changed in 1845 when Brion was separated from Géovreissiat and raised to an independent municipality. By decree of October 3, 2008, the municipality was renamed Béard-Géovreissiat.
