geography

location

Priay is located at 232  m , about 23 kilometers south-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 44 km northeast of Lyon and 49 kilometers southeast of the city of Mâcon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the banks of the Ain on the eastern edge of the countryside and historical province of Dombes . Neighboring municipalities of Priay are Varambon in the north, Ambronay in the east, Château-Gaillard in the south and Villette-sur-Ain in the west.

topography

The area of the 15.77 km 2 municipal area comprises a section of the lower Ain valley and the rise to the east of it to the Dombes plain, which is around 100 m higher. The valley floor in the Priay area is characterized by an almost one kilometer wide alluvial forest , which in its entire width is still part of the municipal area. With the exception of a campsite, this valley is not built on. The settlement area of Priay only begins a few meters above and climbs a slope above the Ain in the north. Several small streams drain the parish soil to the Ain and in the north to the Suran . The north-east of the municipality is occupied by the Bois de Priay forest , in which the municipality reaches its highest point at 342  m . In addition to forests (38%), meadows and other agricultural areas (33%) make up a large proportion of land.

history

The Saint-Pierre church in Priay

In the Middle Ages, Priay was first mentioned as a parish around 1250 ( Ecclesia de Prioi ). Originally under the sovereignty of the Lords of Coligny, the Priay lands came into the possession of the La Palud family, who lived in Varambon, in the 13th century. In 1576 Priay was incorporated into the Marquisate of Varambon. Twenty years later it was devastated by the attacking French troops of Marshal Biron . With the Treaty of Lyon , Priay finally came to France in 1601.

After the population had been stable at around 1000 in the 19th century, it fell to the low of 645 in the first half of the 20th century (1946). Since 1990 a strong population increase has been recorded. The local residents of Priay are called Priaysien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Priay was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition to the few remaining courtyards, there are now various local small businesses and, with Styl'Monde, a company in the plastic processing industry with around 70 employees. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. A campsite on the banks of the Ain has 125 pitches.

The Ain bridge from Priay

The village is located on the D984 department road, which leads from Neuville-sur-Ain to Pérouges and opens up the right bank of the Ain. This former N84 has given up its importance as a thoroughfare to the motorway and the D1075 on the other bank. In Priay a bridge crosses the Ain. The next motorway connection to the A42 is around 5 km away. A few kilometers east of Priay is the Mâcon – Ambérieu railway , on which the TER Rhône-Alpes trains run and stop at Ambronay-Priay station, 5 km away . The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (50 km) and Geneva (96 km).

education

In Priay there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
