Condamine is a French municipality with 411 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Condamine is located at 570  m , about 22 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and 27 km east-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The farming village extends in central Bugey , in a valley basin in the northern section of the Combe du Val valley in the Jura , at the entrance to the Vallée de Meyriat, at the northern foot of the Grande Montagne.

The area of ​​the 4.64 km ² municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The western part is occupied by the wide, north-south oriented basin of the Combe du Val, which forms a syncline in the Jura . This trough is drained by the Borrey to the north to the Oignin . From the Combe du Val the municipal area extends eastward into the extensive wooded area of ​​the Forêt de Meyriat , in which the highest elevation of Condamine is reached at 808  m . The northern boundary is formed by the deeply cut erosion valley Vallée de Meyriat .

Neighboring municipalities of Condamine are Saint-Martin-du-Frêne in the north, Chevillard in the east, Vieu-d'Izenave in the south and Maillat in the west.

history

Condamine is first mentioned as a parish in the 13th century. The village belonged to the Lords of Balmey, who were under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy. With the Treaty of Lyon it came to France in 1601. Since the second half of the 18th century, the water power of the Doye brook has been used to operate paper mills.

With 411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Condamine is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (289 people were still counted in 1911), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the mid-1970s. Since then the population has more than doubled. The locals of Condamine are called Condaminois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Condamine was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Martin-du-Frêne to Hauteville-Lompnes . Other local road connections exist with Maillat and Brénod. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around five kilometers away.

In Condamine there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
