geography

Hauteville-Lompnes is located at 810  m , about 20 kilometers east of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and 38 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The mountain health resort extends in central Bugey , slightly elevated on the eastern edge of a wide valley of the High Jura , which is part of the Plateau d'Hauteville, at the foot of the Planachat ridge.

The area of the 50.34 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The central part is occupied by a wide trough oriented in north-south direction (on average at 780  m ), which forms a syncline in the Jura folds . In the south of this depression lies the extensive moorland Marais de Vaux with the moor lake Étang des Lésines . The area is drained by the Albarine , which reaches the depression from the north, flows across it and to the west of it plunges with a waterfall ( Cascade de Charabotte ) into a deeply cut erosion valley surrounded by striking rock walls.

In the east, the valley is flanked by the wooded ridge that stretches from the plan agate northwards over the ridge of the Combe de Mazière (at 1240  m, the highest elevation in Hauteville-Lompnes) and the Col de la Rochette to the Bois de la Valorse ( 1200  m ) moves. This anticline separates the Plateau d'Hauteville from Valromey to the east . To the west, the community area extends over a series of narrow ridges to the Tré Pellay ( 1011  m ). The mountain ranges with Dergis ( 1000  m ), Forêt Domaniale de Jailloux and the Longecombe plateau, which adjoin the Albarine gorge to the south, also belong to the municipality.

The community consisted of the two main settlements of Hauteville ( 810  m ) and Lompnes ( 820  m ), which have now grown together, as well as numerous villages, hamlets and farms, including:

  • L'Orcet ( 850  m ) above Hauteville
  • Les Lésines ( 770  m ) on the edge of the Marais de Vaux
  • Nantuy ( 740  m ) at the upper entrance to the Gorges de l'Albarine
  • La Ragiaz ( 815  m ) on the edge of the Bois de l'Esclas
  • Lacoux ( 800  m ) on a ledge north of the Gorges de l'Albarine
  • La Bertinière ( 835  m ) on the plateau north of the Gorges de l'Albarine
  • Longecombe ( 820  m ) on the plateau south of the Gorges de l'Albarine
  • Grand Dergis ( 900  m ) on the western slope of the Dergis ridge
  • Dergis-Sainte-Anne ( 870  m ) on the western slope of the Dergis ridge
  • Dergis-Michaud ( 890  m ) on the western slope of the Dergis ridge
  • Cérarge ( 870  m ) west of the Longecombe valley
  • Pouvillieu ( 890  m ) on a saddle south of Longecombe

Neighboring towns of Hauteville-Lompnes are Aranc and Champdor-Corcelles with Champdor in the north, Ruffieu and Lompnieu in the east, Cormaranche-en-Bugey , Thézillieu and Hostiaz in the south and Tenay , Chaley and Évosges in the west.

history

The municipality of Hauteville-Lompnes was settled very early. Evidence of the presence of humans during the Neolithic as well as during the Roman times has been found.

Hauteville was first mentioned in 1137 under the name Alta Villa (meaning high, high village ); from 1563 the spelling Aute Ville has been handed down. Lompnes was built in the 12th century at a mansion of the Counts of Savoy , to whom the whole area was under the control of the 11th century. With the Treaty of Lyon , Hauteville and Lompnes came to France in 1601.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the villages of Hauteville and Lompnes, which were still independent communities at the time, developed into important mountain health resorts for tuberculosis sufferers, known throughout Europe . This led to the construction of numerous sanatoriums and a tourist and economic boom in the Plateau d'Hauteville. In 1909 the construction of a tramway from Tenay to Hauteville was started, which should lead through a series of tunnels due to the difficult topography. However, the work was stopped with the beginning of the First World War . Both villages experienced rapid growth and merged with effect from July 31, 1942 to form the municipality of Hauteville-Lompnes. Another change in area took place on September 1, 1964, when the previously independent communities Lacoux and Longecombe were incorporated into Hauteville-Lompnes.

Jurassic limestone has been mined near Hauteville-Lompnes since the 19th century and was used, among other things, for the construction of the Empire State Building in New York and the Capitol in Washington.
