Hostiaz , formerly Hostias written, is a former French community and today's commune Déléguée with 87 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belonged to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement Belley . It was merged with Cormaranche-en-Bugey , Hauteville-Lompnes and Thézillieu to form the Commune nouvelle Plateau d'Hauteville by decree of December 12, 2018, with effect from January 1, 2019 .
geography
Hostiaz is located at 815 m , about 15 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and 41 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (beeline). The small farming village extends in central Bugey , on a westward sloping slope in the High Jura , on the Plateau d'Hauteville , high above the deeply cut Cluse des Hôpitaux , which, as a valley breakthrough, provides the transport connection for railways and roads between Ambérieu-en-Bugey and Culoz guaranteed.
The area of the 10.60 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The western part is occupied by the Hostias plateau (at an average of 750 m ), which slopes down with a striking cliff to the west to the Cluse des Hôpitaux and to the north to the valley of the Albarine . The limit is always above the cliff edge. To the east, the community area extends over the slope of Hostiaz to the adjacent, mostly wooded Jura mountain ranges, the crests of which are oriented in a north-south direction. In between is the Saint-Sulpice-le-Vieux basin . At 1085 m , the highest point of Hostiaz is reached on a wooded knoll south of the Charbonnière .
Hostiaz includes the hamlet of Saint-Sulpice-le-Vieux ( 940 m ) in a hollow north of the Charbonnière as well as a few individual farms. Hostias neighbors are Hauteville-Lompnes in the north, Thézillieu in the east, Prémillieu and La Burbanche in the south and Tenay in the west.
history
In the 11th century a Cluniac priory was founded near Saint-Sulpice-le-Vieux , which was moved to Thézillieu in 1149. The monks cleared the surrounding area, made it arable and thus also laid the foundation stone for the development of the Hostiaz settlement. This is first mentioned in a document in 1120 under the name Hostias . Over time, the spelling changed via Ottiaz (around 1400) and Hotiaz (in the 18th century) back to Hostias. The place name probably goes back to the old French word oste (guest, stranger). Hostias had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy since the Middle Ages . With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601. In August 2007 the parish was officially renamed Hostiaz.
Attractions
The village church of Hostiaz was built in the 19th century in the neo-Romanesque style.

With 87 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Hostiaz was one of the smallest communities in the Ain department. Due to its remoteness, the village experienced a significant population decline during the 20th century due to heavy emigration. Since the beginning of the 1980s, a slight increase in population has been recorded.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Hostiaz was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. There are no other jobs in the village outside of the primary sector.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Tenay at the Department of Road D1504 by the Cluse of Hôpitaux. Further road connections exist with Prémillieu and Longecombe.
