Évosges is a French municipality with 145 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Hauteville-Lompnes and the Arrondissement Belley .

geography

Évosges is located at 740  m , about eleven kilometers east of the city of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and 34 km southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The small farming village extends in central Bugey , in a hollow on the western edge of the Plateau d'Hauteville in the High Jura , high above the deeply cut valley of the Albarine , which together with the Cluse des Hôpitaux as a valley breakthrough, the transport connection for railways and roads between Ambérieu- en-Bugey and Culoz guaranteed.

The area of ​​the 12.08 km² municipal area covers a section of the southern French Jura. The area lies almost exclusively on the Jura high plateau. In the area of ​​the village there is a dry valley, which is surrounded by a plateau-like landscape both in the west and in the east. The border runs in the west above the steep drop to the Albarine or its side stream Mandorne . Only in the south does the community soil reach down into a short side valley of the Albarine. To the northeast, the community area extends over the plateau to the ridge of the Tré Pellay , on which the highest elevation of Évosges is reached at 1001  m .

Neighboring municipalities of Évosges are Aranc in the north, Plateau d'Hauteville with Hauteville-Lompnes and Chaley in the east, Tenay and Argis in the south and Oncieu in the west.

history

Since the 12th century, Évosges owned a church that was dependent on the Saint-Rambert monastery. In the Middle Ages the village was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon it came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The village church of Évosges originally dates from the 12th century. The Romanesque building was restored and redesigned in the 17th century.

With 145 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Évosges is one of the smallest communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (406 people were still counted in 1896), the population remained at an almost constant level since the early 1970s. The local residents of Évosges are called Evosgien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Évosges was predominantly an agricultural village. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey on the D1504 departmental road through the Albarine valley. Further road connections exist with Tenay and Aranc.
