Izieu is a commune of 235 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Belley and the Canton of Belley .

geography

The municipality borders on Prémeyzel to the north, Peyrieu and Murs-et-Gélignieux to the east and Brégnier-Cordon to the south and west . In the south, the Rhône forms the municipal boundary . The village center is 3 kilometers from the river. Wines from the municipality of Izieu are allowed to use the Vin du Bugey designation of origin .

history

La Maison d'Izieu is the name of an orphanage that housed 44 Jewish orphans and half-orphans. These were abducted on April 6, 1944 on the orders of Klaus Barbie and deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp via the Drancy assembly camp ; only a child who escaped by escaping survived. On the initiative of Beate Klarsfeld , a memorial was built in Izieu in the late 1980s .
