Apremont is a French municipality with 376 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Nantua in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Apremont is located at 900  m , about six kilometers south of the city of Oyonnax and 33 km east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Haut- Bugey , in the Jura , in a valley in the headwaters of the Ange , at the western foot of Mont Burdet , north of the deeply incised Cluse de Nantua .

The area of the 14.57 km² large municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura. The central part is occupied by the Apremont basin, which is one kilometer wide, extends in a north-south direction, lies at an average of 920  m and geologically forms an anticline valley . The northern section is drained by the Ange through a rapidly sloping erosion valley, while the southern section shows no surface runoff.

This anticline valley is flanked on both sides by steeply rising, but only around 100 m high, slopes. To the west are the forest heights of the Grande Montagne ( 1007  m ), the Mont Jora ( 1035  m ) and the Haut Crêt ( 990  m ). The community area extends to the western slope of these heights, which are subdivided by various erosion channels. In the east the demarcation lies on the ridge of Mont Burdet , on which the highest elevation of Apremont is reached at 1043  m .

The scattered settlement of Apremont consists of different settlement centers, hamlets and farm groups, including:

  • Grand Vallon ( 890  m ) in the Apremont hollow
  • Petit Vallon ( 910  m ) in the valley of Apremont and seat of the municipal administration
  • La Gotette ( 920  m ) in a hollow on the north slope of Mont Jora
  • Ablatrix ( 935  m ) on a plateau south of the Haut Crêt

Neighboring communities of Apremont are Oyonnax in the north, Charix in the east, Nantua in the south and Montréal-la-Cluse , Martignat , Groissiat and Bellignat in the west.

history

Apremont was first mentioned in a document in 1237 under the Latin name apud Asperum Montem . Over time, the spelling changed via Aspremont (1394) and Apud Asperomontem (1437) to the current name. The place name comes from the Latin words asper (rough, bumpy, uneven) and mons (mountain) together.

Since the 13th century, Apremont formed its own small lordship, which was subordinate to the Lords of Thoire-Villars and in 1402 came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. With the Treaty of Lyon , Apremont came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The village church of Apremont (in the district of Petit Vallon) was built in 1820. The ruins of the former medieval castle have been preserved; next to it are the remains of the former church.

With 376 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Apremont is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 338 people), a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s. The local residents of Apremont are called Marranes in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Apremont was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , especially cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Oyonnax. Other road connections exist with Nantua and Échallon . The closest connection to the A404 motorway ( Saint-Martin-du-Frêne - Oyonnax) is around 10 km away.
