Challes-la-Montagne is a French commune with 194 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Pont-d'Ain and the Arrondissement of Nantua .
geography
Challes-la-Montagne is located at 497 m , about 20 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies) in the southern French Jura mountains. The area of the 7.65 km 2 municipal area includes part of the Montagne de Berthiand , a ridge ( anticline ) in the Bugey with an undulating plateau between the Ain valley and the Oignin valley . Here, gentle hollows alternate with peaks and long ridges. Despite a slight relief structure, the municipality has no surface running water because the rainwater seeps away immediately into the porous calcareous subsoil. The western edge of the municipality follows the edge of the terrain, behind which the 200 m deep gorge of the Ain begins.
In addition to the actual village of Challes, the two hamlets of Cizod and Samériat also belong to the municipality. They are located southwest of Challes on the same plateau. Neighboring municipalities of Challes-la-Montagne are Serrières-sur-Ain and Leyssard in the north, Ceignes in the east, Saint-Alban in the south and Poncin in the west.
history
The municipality of Challes-la-Montagne was owned by the Lords of Poncin and Cerdon , who in the 12th and 13th centuries were subordinate to the Counts of Coligny and then to the Thoire-Villars. Challes and Cizod are first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In the 14th century the municipality came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy , and with the Treaty of Lyon in 1601 it came to France. The community originally just called "Challes" gave itself the current name "Challes-la-Montagne" in 2006.

With 194 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Challes-la-Montagne is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased somewhat in the first half of the 20th century (350 people were still counted in 1901), it has fluctuated around today's value since the beginning of the 1990s. The local residents of Challes-la-Montagne are called Chaléen (ne) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Challes-la-Montagne was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. Of the 22 small businesses (as of 2010), around half are still agricultural today. Most of the remaining gainfully employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The small departmental road D85 connects the municipality with Poncin and the link road D1084 between Bourg-en-Bresse and Nantua. The A40 motorway runs along the southern municipal border, but the nearest connection is only 12 kilometers away in Saint-Martin-du-Frêne.
