View of Leyssard

Leyssard is a French municipality with 152 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is assigned to the canton of Pont-d'Ain in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Leyssard is located at 566  m , about 20 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse and 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Oyonnax (as the crow flies) in the southern French Jura mountains. The area of the 9.13 km² municipal area includes part of the Montagne de Berthiand , a ridge ( anticline ) in the Bugey with an undulating plateau between the Ain valley and the valley of the Oignin . Here, gentle hollows alternate with peaks and long ridges. In the south, the Leyssard creek leaves the municipal area in the direction of Ain, but it does not carry water all year round, as a large part of the rainwater quickly seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. The western edge of the municipality follows the edge of the terrain, behind which the 200 m deep gorge of the Ain begins.

The municipality of Leyssard consists of six small hamlets, namely:

  • Leyssard ( 480  m ) in a hollow near the source of the stream of the same name
  • Chapiard ( 638  m ) in the south on the western flank of a ridge reaching up to 815  m
  • Écuvillon ( 590  m ) in the south
  • Mens ( 731  m ) on an elevation in the west of the municipality
  • Solomiat ( 632  m ) on a plateau south of Mont Griset
  • Balvay ( 542  m ) in an elevation above a loop of the Ain.

The ascent to the Col de Berthiand pass runs through the municipality , but none of the hamlets are directly on the pass road. Neighboring municipalities of Leyssard are Bolozon and Sonthonnax-la-Montagne in the north, Nurieux-Volognat , Peyriat and Ceignes in the west, Challes-la-Montagne in the south and Serrières-sur-Ain in the west.

history

Leyssard is first mentioned in a document in 1250 under the name Leyssart . From the 13th century to 1402 Leyssard belonged to the rule of the Thoire-Villars, after which it came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon it came to France in 1601. The municipality, which originally reached as far as the Ain river, was divided up in 1828, so that the hamlets of Serrières , Sonthonnax le Vignoble and Merpuis et Malaval formed the independent municipality of Serrières-sur-Ain .

Attractions

At Balvay there is a lookout point over the gorge-like valley of the Ain, the Revermont and the wide plain of the Bresse at the site of a castle, of which the foundations are still visible today. The village church in Leyssard dates from the beginning of the 16th century.

With 152 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Leyssard is one of the smallest communities in the Ain department. After the number of inhabitants had continuously decreased during the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 406 people), a slight increase in population was recorded again at the turn of the century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Leyssard was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding, as well as forestry. In the meantime the village has transformed into a residential community, most of the employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. Five farms (as of 2010) are still located in the village.

The municipal area is crossed by the departmental road D979 that goes from Nantua to Bourg-en-Bresse . The road that runs across the Jura ridge climbs up to the Col de Berthiand pass, and spur roads lead from it to the individual hamlets. From Chapiat a side road leads to Challes-la-Montagne and to Étables. The closest connection to the regional motorway network is the “La Croix Châlon” junction on the A404 .
