Montisi is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Montalcino in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The district is located 5 km east of San Giovanni d'Asso , 15 km northeast of the capital Montalcino and 32 km southeast of the provincial capital of Siena at 413 meters above sea level in the Crete Senesi . The historic center is divided into the districts of Castello , Piazza , San Martino and Torre .

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1213 in a document by Rinaldo Griffolini di Monteghisi . In the 11th century the place was owned by the Scialenghi counts . From 1283 the place was an independent municipality. When Simone di Ranuccio Cacciaconte deglia Scialenghi died in 1295, he left his property to the Hospital Santa Maria della Scala . The hospital installed a grancia (similar to a Zehnthof ) here for autonomous supply of the hospital. The building was sold in 1775 by Leopold II to Jacopo Mannucci Benincasa , whose heirs are still owned by the Grancia today. On June 30, 1944, the main tower, similar to the Torre del Mangia of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, was destroyed by German troops . Today contains a restored 58-seat theater. The once independent place became part of Trequanda in 1777 . From 1878 to January 1, 2017, the place belonged to San Giovanni d'Asso and then became part of the municipality of Montalcino with San Giovanni d'Asso.
