San Giovanni d'Asso is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Montalcino in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place lies in the landscape of the Crete Senesi just north of the Val d'Orcia and extends over 66  km² . It is located about 10 km northeast of the capital Montalcino, 30 km southeast of the provincial capital Siena and about 80 km southeast of the regional capital Florence at 310 m. The addition of the name d'Asso refers to the river Asso , which runs through the village and spends 12 of its 38 km here. Other important bodies of water in the municipality are the Torrenti Serlate (8 of 18 km in the municipality) and Trove (6 of 16 km). The place is in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone D, 1 873 GG.

The hamlets Lucignano d'Asso , Montelifrè , Monterongriffoli (276 m, approx. 10 inhabitants) and Vergelle belong to the place .

history

The place was first mentioned by the church of San Pietro in Villore in 714. The Castello (castle) has been known since the 12th century. In 1151 the place belonged to the Count Paltonieri di Forteguerro , who was under the rule of Siena, after which it passed to the Ardengheschi . In 1256 Orlando Buonsignori bought the castle. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Salimbeni came to power. After the Pannilini , the Republic of Siena took control of the place in the middle of the 15th century. On January 1, 2017, the place merged with the neighboring municipality of Montalcino , the place name Montalcino remained.

  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , Pieve built in the 14th century in the town center.
  • Chiesa della Madonna del Tribbio (also Santa Maria delle Grazie ), church just outside the town center in the direction of Asciano. Previously contained the work Trittico della Madonna col Bambino ei santi Pietro e Paolo (150 cm × 146 cm) by Ugolino di Nerio , which is now in the Uffizi in Florence.
  • Museo del Tartuffo , truffle museum in the Castello di San Giovanni in the town center.
  • Pieve di Santa Maria a Pava , Pieve, which is about 1 km south of the main town. The pieve was mentioned as early as the 8th century and contains a lunette with the fresco Madonna col Bambino e due santi from the early 14th century.
  • Pieve di San Pietro a Pava , former and no longer existing Pieve near the Pieve di Santa Maria. Used since 2004 for archaeological excavations (Scavo archeologico di Pava).
