In the west, this depression is limited by the steep slope of the Chaîne de l'Avocat ( 1014  m ). To the east, the community area extends over the gently rising, densely wooded slope of the Forêt de Meyriat and extends into the Meyriat basin (right side valley of the Combe du Val). history

Vieu-d'Izenave is first mentioned in 1185 under the name De Vico . In the course of time the spelling changed via Vicus d'Isinava (1250), Viu de Ysinava (1288), Vyu (1299), Vyeu (1313), Vic d'Ysenava (1350), Viou (1394), Viuz (1433 ) and Vieux d'Izenave (until 1801) to today's Vieu-d'Izenave. The place name goes back to the Latin word vicus (hamlet).

The Canon Ponce du Balmay of Lyon donated his property in the Vallée de Meyriat to the Carthusian Order in 1116 in order to found a monastery here. The monks of the Chartreuse de Meyriat cleared the area, made it arable and laid the foundation stone for the settlement of the Combe du Val. Since the Middle Ages, Vieu-d'Izenave has been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy. With the Treaty of Lyon , the village came to France in 1601 and then belonged to the Barony of Cerdon.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, originally a medieval building, was largely rebuilt in the 17th century. From the Carthusian monastery of Meyriat, which was destroyed during the French Revolution , only the ruins of the monastery church (12th century) remain.
