geography

Confort is 550  m above sea level, about five kilometers north of the town of Bellegarde-sur-Valserine (as the crow flies). The village extends in the French Jura on a slope shoulder in the longitudinal valley of the Valserine , which opens here towards the Rhone Valley , above the mouth of the Semine, at the western foot of the Grand Crêt d'Eau .

The area of the 11.66 km² municipal area includes a section of the Upper Jurassic. The western border runs along the Valserine, which flows from north to south in an erosion valley ( Gorges de la Valserine ) cut around 100 m into the surroundings . The valley is accompanied on both sides by steep slopes interspersed with rock bands. The community area stretches eastward from the river to the flat shoulder of the Confort slope. This is followed by the wooded steep slope of the Jura ridge. The area extends to the height of the Montagne du Crêt ( 1140  m ) and to the broad ridge of the Grand Crêt d'Eau, at the summit of which the highest elevation of Confort is reached at 1621  m . There are extensive mountain pastures above around 1400  m . The municipality of Confort is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Jura ).

Confort also includes the hamlet of La Mulaz ( 560  m ) on the shoulder of the slope north of the village and various farms. Neighboring municipalities of Confort are Chézery-Forens in the north, Farges and Collonges in the east, Lancrans in the south and Châtillon-en-Michaille and Montanges in the west.

history

Confort is mentioned for the first time in 1337 under the name Castra Balonis et Grandisconfort . The current name Confort has been handed down from 1553 and Grand-Confort from 1650 . The place name goes back to the old French word confort (help) and denotes a fortified place that afforded protection. Already in the 12th century there was a country chapel near Confort, which was dedicated to St. Roland and was an important pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century the place belonged to the lordship of Thoire-Villars. Confort belonged together with Vanchy to the municipality of Lancrans, which stretched over the entire eastern slope of the Valserine near Bellegarde. It was not until 1858 that the place was separated and made an independent municipality.

Further road connections exist with Montanges and the winter sports resort of Menthières. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around eleven kilometers away.

In Confort there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated pre-school ).
