Rajna Kabaiwanska ( Bulgarian Райна Кабаиванска , maiden name Rajna Jakimowa ; born December 15, 1934 in Burgas ) is a Bulgarian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Rajna Kabaiwanska was born in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Burgas. Her father was a doctor, her mother a physics teacher. She studied piano and singing (first mezzo-soprano , later soprano ) at the State Conservatory in Sofia . Her first appearances were at the Sofia Opera in Eugene Onegin (1957) and Un ballo in maschera (1958). In 1958 she received a scholarship for further studies in Moscow, but she managed to change the terms of the scholarship and instead went to Milan, where she studied with Zita Fumagalli Riva. In 1959 she made her debut in The Mantle of Puccini and Bajazzo by Leoncavallo ; in the same year she won the opera competition in Vercelli (together with Luciano Pavarotti ) . This was followed by appearances at various theaters in Italy (San Remo, Mantua, Trento, Bozen etc.). Between 1960 and 1980 she sang at major opera houses such as Teatro alla Scala , Metropolitan Opera , Carnegie Hall , Covent Garden , Bolshoi Theater and Teatro Colón . She also appeared under Herbert von Karajan at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival .

On September 8, 2007 she sang the Ave Maria of Desdemona from Otello at the funeral for Luciano Pavarotti in Modena .

Rajna Kabaiwanska currently teaches as a professor at the Accademia di Musica Chigiana in Italy.

Rajna Kabaiwanska became famous for roles such as Tosca , Madama Butterfly and La traviata . Her voice was characterized by an unmistakable timbre , a great variety of styles and nuances and was suitable for both dramatic and lyrical roles. Rajna Kabaiwanska Fund

In 2002 the Rajna Kabaiwanska Fund was founded together with the New Bulgarian University. Every year there are masterclasses for highly talented young musicians from all over the world with the possibility of receiving scholarships for further music studies in Italy etc.
