The Ülemiste järv (German: Obersee ) is a lake in the southeast of the Estonian capital Tallinn .

General

The Ülemiste lake covers an area of 9.6 km². Its greatest depth is 6 m, the average 2.5 m. The most important tributaries are the Pirita , Vääna , Jägala and Pärnu rivers via various channels . The lakeshore is mostly flat and sandy.

The lake has officially been part of the urban area since the 15th century. It has served the city as a drinking water reservoir since the 14th century, from which it draws around 60,000 m³ of water every day. The lake is therefore cordoned off and only accessible to the municipal waterworks.

The lake is located in the approach lane of the airport , which is why fears about pollution of the drinking water by aviation are often cited. There have been three aircraft accidents in his area: in 1938 the Polish aviator Zbigniew Olenski crashed into the lake with his single-engine RWD , in January 1966 an Il-14 from the island of Saaremaa (Ösel) had to land on the frozen lake March 2010 saw the crash landing of a Polish An-26 flying for DHL on the ice of the lake, the last accident to date.

mythology

Lake Ülemiste plays a big role in Estonian mythology. Legend has it that the lake was created from the tears of grieving Linda . A large rock in the lake is called the Linda Stone . According to legend, Linda should have brought him to the grave of her husband Kalev on Toompea before he fell off her shoulder.

Popular belief connects the lake with the story of the old man from Ülemiste (Estonian: Ülemiste vanake or järvevana ). He asks the first person he meets whether the city of Tallinn has already been completed. If the answer is yes, legend has it that it would flood the city with the waters of Lake Ülemiste. Therefore, Tallinn will never be finished.

Tallinn-Ülemiste Airport

On the eastern shore of the lake is the international airport of the Estonian capital, Tallinn-Ülemiste , which got its name from the lake.
