The Pirita River ( Estonian Pirita jõgi ; German (historical) Brigittenbach ) is a river in Estonia . It is one of the largest rivers in Harju County .

The Pirita River has its source at the Pususoo moor in Järva County , around 20 km northwest of Paide . Its length is 105 km. In the Tallinn district of Pirita ( German Sankt Brigitten ) it flows into the Tallinn Bay and thus into the Gulf of Finland .

The catchment area of the Pirita River covers 799 km². He covers a gradient of 75 m. Its average flow rate is 7–8 m³ / s.

The two tributaries on the left are the Kuivajõgi and the Tuhala jõgi . The latter partially flows underground. Water from the Pirita River also flows through a canal into Lake Ülemiste , the most important drinking water reservoir in the Estonian capital. The last section of the river at the former Birgitten monastery Pirita is partly under landscape protection.
