history

The company was founded in 1909 by the married couple Hans and Maria Westphal. In 1930 the production of fully canned fish based on the Spanish and Norwegian models began. In 2006 Hawesta achieved sales of around 47 million euros, in 2007 62 million euros. After a sharp decline in sales in 2008 to around 56 million euros, combined with massive layoffs, Rügen Fisch AG took over the company in 2009 . At the end of 2015, the large Asian fish processor Thai Union made an offer to take over a majority stake in the Rügen Fisch group, which the previous shareholder families agreed to. The transaction was completed at the end of January 2016 following antitrust approval.
