Jakob Liiv (* February 16 . Jul / 28. February  1859 greg. In Alatskivi ; † 17th January 1938 in Rakvere ) was an Estonian poet and playwright . He is the older brother of the writer Juhan Liiv (1864–1913).

Life

Jakob Liiv was born into a poor family. He attended the parish school in Kodavere until 1878 . He then completed training as a school teacher in Kavastu and Väike-Maarja . From 1901 he worked as an assistant teacher and as a community clerk. Later he founded a bookshop in Väike-Maarja. In 1913 Liiv settled in Rakvere, where he found employment as a bank clerk. He also worked for the newspaper "Rakvere Teataja".

With the independence of Estonia in 1918, he was drawn into politics. From 1919 to 1921 he was Lord Mayor of the city. Among other things, he founded the Theater of Rakvere. He then worked again as a primary school teacher until 1926. Jakob Liiv is buried in the Rakvere cemetery today. In Väike-Maarja ( Lääne-Viru district ), a memorial by the Tartu sculptor Roman Haavamägi (1891–1964) has been commemorating him since 1938 .

Jakob Liiv was Estonian-national. He supported the growing emancipation movement and the reflection of the Estonians on their own language and culture. Liiv worked closely with the Estonian newspapers and associations of the time.

Liiv was above all a master of lyrical form. His early poetry describes his homeland and the nature on Lake Peipus in an idyllic way . However, in view of the Russification efforts of the tsarist state power, melancholy tones are mixed in. Only around the turn of the century did his art become more realistic. Because of his socially critical statements, he repeatedly had difficulties with the tsarist censorship.
