Port is a French municipality with 849 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Nantua in the Arrondissement of Nantua .

geography

Port is located at 477  m , about 13 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Oyonnax and 27 kilometers east of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north of Bugey , on the west bank of Lac de Nantua in the Jura , on the edge of the Brion plain and at the entrance to the Juraquertal of the Cluse de Nantua , at the northern foot of the Montagne de Chamoise .

The area of the 4.25 km² municipal area covers a section of the southern French Jura. The western part lies in the Brion plain, which is almost three kilometers wide here and forms a syncline in the Jura folds . The plain used to be a large swamp area, which was drained and converted into cultivated land after the artificial lowering of the lake level of Lac de Nantua in 1856. The northern border runs along the Bras du Lac drainage channel , which feeds the water to the Oignin . To the southeast, the community area extends in a narrow strip over a steep slope to the high plateau of the Montagne de Chamoise and to the cliff edge of Les Monts d'Ain, which slopes steeply towards Nantua . At 991  m, Port's highest elevation is reached here.

Neighboring communities of Port are Montréal-la-Cluse in the north, Nantua in the east, Saint-Martin-du-Frêne in the south and Brion in the west.

history

The port, first mentioned in the 11th century, belonged to the property of the Nantua monastery. In the Middle Ages the village was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . With the Treaty of Lyon , Port came to France in 1601.

Attractions

The originally Gothic village church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was restored and enlarged in the 19th century. One of the natural attractions is the Lac de Nantua , which is nestled in a basin between steep slopes criss-crossed by ledges.

With 849 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Port is one of the small communities in the Ain department. Since the early 1970s, the number of inhabitants has tripled thanks to the attractive residential area. The locals of Port are called Bédouin (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Port was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture and forestry. There are also some small and medium-sized businesses today, including Poralu. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the vicinity.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D1084 departmental road, which leads from Bellegarde-sur-Valserine through the Cluse de Nantua to Pont-d'Ain . Another road connection is with Brion. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around five kilometers away. Port is on the Haut-Bugey line , the railway line from Bellegarde via Nantua to Bourg-en-Bresse , which reopened in 2010.

In Port there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
